Attorneys Seeking Settlement in Willow River Parent Group Theft Case

Nichole R. Haugen is alleged to have stolen more than $35,000 while working as treasurer of the Willow River Parent Group.

A Hudson woman charged with four felony counts of theft from the Willow River Parent Group is likely going to settle out of court.

Attorneys representing Nichole R. Haugen, 29, and the State of Wisconsin said in open court on Tuesday morning that neither side is seeking a trial in a case in which Haugen is alleged to have stolen more than $35,000—on four separate occasions—from the group while working as its treasurer.

Haugen declined comment after leaving the courtroom.

According to the Hudson Star-Observer, Haugen pleaded "innocent" to the charges on Sept. 16.

If convicted of all the charges against her, Wisconsin statutory law says Haugen could spend as much as 36 years in prison and have to pay an $85,000 fine.

Haugen's next appearance in court is scheduled for Jan. 18, 2012.

Settling out of court is quite a stretch from "...could spend as much as 36 years in prison and have to pay an $85,000 fine." Perhaps a deal is in the works. Is the Parent Group too forgiving?

Can anyone ever be too forgiving? Seems like restitution, public humiliation, and a criminal record is fair and just for this woman. Wouldn't it be better to help her be restored to be a contributing member of society than to bear the financial burden of a long incarceration?

Perhaps a pay back plan with interest and changing the system so it is not easy to embezzle. Threat of jail time could be used if she fails to honor her obligations.

Must have a good lawyer ,who paid for that I wonder. Great article it never says the lawyers name but quotes him or her. Also people get jail time for say kicking in their own door and being charged with disturbing the peace but she pleas and gets nothing for stealing 36 grand what a crock liberal weenies in that prostitutors office.

Kicking in their door mind you because they were locked out of their house.

Looks to me like you get more time in the slammer for walking down the hallway at the courthouse and listening in on a coversation than you do embezzling thousands of dollars. Perhaps our district attorny should seek alternative employment.....
