Police have charged a second suspect in the case of an armed home invasion in which the homeowner was tied up and robbed of possessions.

UPDATE Nov. 23: The Pioneer Press is reporting that a second man, Jared S. Carr, 36, of West Bend, WI, has been charged with felony armed robbery as a party to the crime.

UPDATE at 10:30 a.m., Nov. 23: St. Croix County Cheif Deputy Scott Knudson said the victim, Steven Iverson, has posted bond and was released from jail after being arrested on drug charges.

UPDATE at 10:35 p.m.: Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen said the victim in this case, 29-year-old Steven Iverson was also arrested, Monday morning.

Iverson was arrested on drug charges and is also being held in the St. Croix County Jail. Jensen said he was hopeful both the suspect and victim would appear in front of judges as soon as Tuesday.

Though drugs were found in the burglarized home, Jensen said the house was targeted but it didn't appear to be on account of the narcotics.

"It doesn't appear that they knew each other," he said.

The suspect knew there were guns and where they were, Jensen said. However, all the handguns stolen from the home were found in the streets after Schwartzkopf fled the home. Jensen said he suspects a person in a getaway car drove off before Schwartzkopf was able to get in the car leaving him to flee on foot. The case and additional parties are being being investigated.

The last time the chief could recall an in-home armed attack was in 2005 when a man was stabbed in his home.

UPDATE at 2:47 p.m.: Michael Wayne Schwartzkopf of Fon Du Lac was identified by the St. Croix County Sheriff's office as the man arrested and currently in St. Croix County Jail as the suspect in an armed robbery around 2 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21.

According to state court records the 26-year-old has a history with the law. In 2006 Schwartzkopf was found guilty of the misdemeanors: endanger safety/use/sangerous weapon; resisting or obstructing an officer; and carrying a concealed weapon.

Original Story:

Hudson Police officers and St. Croix County Sheriff’s deputies worked together to arrest a 26-year-old man at around 2 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21 after he allegedly broke into a home in the 1800 block of Stone Creek Street stealing several handguns and case from a safe.

Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen said the man, who is not from the Hudson area, is still in custody and the case is being investigated. “We’re trying to figure out why he hit that particular home and if anyone else was involved. It appears there was another person involved,” the chief said.

The call came in at approximately 1:25 a.m. and officials were dispatched to  the home invasion where the man reportedly “kicked in the front door and pointed a handgun at him … the suspect bound the homeowner’s hands with ‘zip ties’ and forced him to open a safe located in the garage,” according to the police report.

“The man forced open the front door and the boyfriend, who was sleeping on the couch, was tied up and the man got to the safe,” Jensen said. “The girlfriend was in the bedroom and she locked the doors and was able to call the police and that is how we knew the invasion was in progress.”

Officers arrived at the home after the suspect had left and began tracking him with a St. Croix County K9 when they found some of the handguns laying on the ground. Officers tracked the suspect approximately one block to a home in the 1800 block of Shasta Drive. As they reached the home on Shasta they were met by a homeowner who was pulling up in a vehicle; that man told officers he had just drove a man to Kwik Trip after he knocked on his door stating his vehicle had broken down.

Kwik Trip clerks told officers and deputies a male, matching the description of the suspect, was inside the men’s restroom. Officers first removed the clerks from the store and after a few minutes arrested the man as he was leaving the men’s room. Inside the store, officers found a backpack with a loaded handgun and money taken from the home invasion.

The is currently processing both crime scenes and is interviewing witnesses as well as investigating whether a vehicle seen in the area at the time of this crime might be involved. The department is asking anyone with information about this incident to call the Hudson Police Department at 715-386-4771.
