PHOTOS: Local Hunter Kills Massive Black Bear in Hudson

The bear is 7 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs 648 lbs. It is close to a Wisconsin record.

On Saturday, Oct. 9, Lon Feia of Hudson killed a massive bear on his property that he had been stalking for more than a month. He sent these photos and text to Hudson Patch on Oct. 20 after making the rounds with several regional news outlets.

In his own words

After 4 years of waiting I drew a bear tag for our local area of Wisconsin. I was excited to be able to set a bait and hunt bear right on our home place. I first saw this giant on a trail cam photo August 24th and the hunt was on, trying to fool this magnificent animal.

The guile and stealthieness of these "ghosts" is truly amazing and throughout the 5 week bear season beginning early September, I... never laid eyes on him. I spent countless hours in the stand (thank you wife Brigitte for your patient understanding). He stood behind my tree one evening, I could hear him but he slipped away.

Last Saturday, I sat in a new stand (I had to move around to try to fool his nose!) for 7 hours and he showed up just after I left! I truly believe he was watching me and "knew" when I was there or not.

Finally on Sunday 10/09/11 he made a mistake and slipped in quitely taking over a 1/2 hour to close the 50 yard distance from the swamp to the edge of the clearing.

As he was standing in thickish buck thorn, I could not use the bow but made a finishing shot with my shotgun.

I am stunned by the beauty of God's creation and thankful to him for this gift. It is strange for some to understand how I can truly respect and love the animals I hunt, but I do.

His meat will nourish our family and friends he will grace our home as a respected trophy.

This giant weighed 648 pounds and should be listed in the Boone and Crockett record book after mandatory drying period.

He was fairly advanced in age and will be listed among the largest black bears ever harvested in Wisconsin to date.
