Patch Picks: Five Places in Hudson to Scream for Ice Cream

Summer's heat is on the way—cool off with one of these sweet treats around town.

Eating ice cream before it melts in high temps is a time-honored tradition - in fact, I'd say ice cream comes in right behind apple pie in terms of iconic American treats. Check out these places to scream for ice cream in Hudson:

Knoke's Chocolates

If you can make it all the way to the ice cream counter past container after container of tempting chocolate in Knoke's, I salute you. If you don't get sidetracked by their other mouthwatering confections, the trip to the ice cream case is well worth it. Choose from a cup, sugar cone or waffle cone (they'll even dip it in chocolate for an extra dose of delicious) of frozen flavors like birthday cake, peppermint bonbon and cotton candy.

McDonald's

Don't be fooled by its fast food packaging - a McDonald's ice cream cone packs just 150 calories and 3.5 grams of fat, making it a great option for those watching their waistlines.

Cold Stone Creamery

Cold Stone Creamery is home to all things frozen and delicious. Ice cream, ice cream cake, ice cream cupcakes, smoothies, shakes, iced coffee and ice cream sandwiches are all on the menu. Bonus: put a tip in the bucket and you'll be serenaded by the entire staff - dessert and entertainment!

Keys Cafe & Bakery

Keys Cafe may be known for their fresh baked goods, but don't overlook the ice cream on their dessert menu. Customers can choose from shakes, malts, or a cherry or chocolate sundae (fresh fruit and nuts optional).

Dairy Queen

No list of places to purchase ice cream would be complete without Dairy Queen and their famous Blizzard treats. Hudson's Dairy Queen location is perfect for picking up a Dilly Bar, dipped cone or Peanut Buster Parfait and taking a walk through Lakefront Park

Huh, three chain stores and a MN franchise. Somewhat pathetic. At least one is a truly local business.

Good one D.P! You got me there, although it wasn't the Bruins for me :P

I didn't mean to criticize the article so much as I was lamenting the limited local choices. I guess I just prefer home grown businesses.

Since McDonalds was mentioned, I suppose Culvers could have been included.

As for a bit healthier choice, with arguably better quality and flavor, Kaladi's is worth a mention. They offer the Italian version of ice cream, Gelato (http://hudson-wi.patch.com/listings/jw-kaladis).

Thanks for the article!

I think they recently added an ice cream counter at the renovated Freedom Valu Center in North Hudson. Has anybody tried their ice cream? How is it?

"Cacao," the principal ingredient in "Xocai Healthy chocolate" is "100 percent ethically traded." Xocai buys cacao beans from "small family-owned farms in Ivory Coast."
The "cacao farmers" earn a "fair wage and work in humane conditions." Xocai cacao growers do "not use agricultural pesticides" and their farming practices are "environmentally sustainable."

DQ is a MN company and Culvers is a WI company.
My take...nothing beats Knokes but for the price Freedom (North Hudson) does have great ice cream and with kids
does it really matter if you get the "high end" stuff?
Good take on Kahladis too!
KEEP IT LOCAL IF YOU CAN!!!
My kids could care less.

McDonald's and Dairy Queen do not qualify to be called ice cream.

Rich, There are only 2 locally owned shops listed….. BTW Julie DQ is called Reduced Fat Ice Cream. Ice Cream has to have 12% butter-fat before you can call it ice cream.

As a reformed Minnesotan who grew up in Stillwater, I have to mention Nelson's, even though it is across the river. Somewhat ashamed to lead people over there, but it's the best ice cream place around.
