QUOTES: School Board Candidates React to Primary Election Results

Bruch to "offer several community locations for open conversation"; Van Loenen says "It has been a privilege to serve" and "I wish the best to the board."

Tuesday's Hudson School District Board of Education primary election saw two challengers at the top of the results while two incumbents were at the bottom. In the process Barbara Van Loenen, current board president, was eliminated from the race. In last year's school board election, both incumbents — Dan Tjornehoj and Lynn Robson — won re-election over challenger James Kubiak.

On Wednesday, some of the candidates commented on the results.

----

LIZ BRUCH

679 votes - 18.1%

"Thank you to all who voted yesterday on behalf of providing excellent quality education for our community’s children. In the weeks ahead, in addition to conversations about meeting the challenges of some current overcrowding, I look forward to discussing the many other important challenges facing our public schools. To that end, I will soon offer several community locations for open conversation on these important issues. Again, thank you for your interest in the education our community provides for its children."

SANDY GEHRKE

"I am deeply grateful to everyone who supported my candidacy in yesterday’s School Board primary. Thank you for caring as much as I do about Hudson Schools and the future of our kids. I believe all can benefit from new ideas and different approaches to challenges, and that is what I hope to bring to the School Board. I look forward to being involved in resolving the very important issues Hudson schools must deal with. It is my goal that my presence on the Board will provide a venue for the public to have their views heard."

CATHY LEAF

"The results of yesterday's primary election show that the community is looking for new voices to represent them on the school board as we work together to advance the educational goals of the  district. As we move forward, it's critical to create a dialogue with teachers, support staff, parents and other community members about best serving the educational needs of Hudson's students. If elected, I will personally hold regular listening sessions in order to accomplish this."
