Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to Visit Hudson for Uline Groundbreaking

It will be the governor's first visit to Hudson since July.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is scheduled to be in Hudson on Friday for a groundbreaking ceremony of a new Uline distribution center.

The governor is scheduled to take part in the 45-minute ceremony starting at about noon at the Uline site in the St. Croix Business Park, according to Bill Broydrick, a consultant who helped plan the event. The event, which will be held on private property, is for invited guests and members of the media.

The Uline groundbreaking ceremony will take place 24 hours after a press conference Thursday by Recall Walker activists at which organizers are expected to announce that they have enough signatures to force a recall election.

Walker has faced crowds of protesters each time he has visited Hudson in the past 10 months. His last Hudson visit was on July 12 when he held an event at Airworthy Aerospace to talk about progress on a tax reciprocity deal with Minnesota. That event also served as a campaign boost to state Sen. Sheila Harsdorf (R-District 10) who was facing a recall election of her own at the time.

"Where ever he goes people come out to express their dissatisfaction, and I imagine that our grassroots people will do the same as they have in previous visits," said Cathy Leaf, chairwoman of the St. Croix County Democratic Party.

Jesse Garza, chairman of the St. Croix County Republican Party, says he hasn't yet decided if he will attempt to organize a Republican counter-presence.

"I'm not planning on it right now, but it's still early," Garza said.

Hudson Mayor Alan Burchill realizes that there likely will be protesters at Friday's event.

"I'd hate to see that," Burchill said. "This facility should be a great deal for us. Nobody should be mad about jobs coming to our community."

While Leaf agrees about the positive aspects of the Uline facility, sees the event as Walker taking credit for job creation while the state is taking heavy job losses.

"The Uline facility is a positive for St. Croix County," Leaf said. "But to put things in perspective, these jobs are just a drop in the bucket to make up for the 9,700 jobs Wisconsin lost just in October. Walker's jobs plan said, 'Repealing job-killing tax increases will unleash our employers to hire new workers.' Wisconsin is still waiting for this unleashing of hiring. If Gov. Walker wants a true picture of the people that his policies are effecting, he should stop in at the health center or Grace Place. He needs to explain to those affected how balancing the budget on the backs of seniors, students and the vulnerable is good for Wisconsin."

Some critics have noted that by Uline moving its operations just 28 miles from Eagan, MN, across the border to Hudson will have little effect on the number of jobs created for Hudson residents.

"They may not all be living here in Hudson, but they will be eating lunch here and buying gas here," Burchill said. "Once they see what a great community Hudson is, many of them may even buy homes here."

Well I hope the protestors will be out in full force. It would be disappointing if they weren't.

what is the reasoning for the idiot to be here anyway? If Uline wants no negativity, they should contact his office and tell him to stay away!

What a joke. Stealing jobs from Minnesotans is not economic growth.

It's called COMPETITION Paul. For a government employee I understand that this word might be confusing. When you have a net gain in employment though an existing business expanding or when another business moves to the state that is indeed economic growth. Money will be spent in Hudson that isn't being spent currently, houses will be purchases by people who currently work in Eagan, and Uline will add jobs to this facility when completed. Might I suggest a class in rudimentary economics? Remember it is only when a government job is created that we are harming the economy.

Hudson Resident,
Couldn't agree more. If a business moves to Wisconsin because of a "business friendly" climate, then I would consider that economic growth. If only 1 Wisconsin resident gains employment by this move, it's a win!!

So we subsidize a bunch of warehouse jobs that we stole from minnesota. What happens when south dakota offers them a bigger subsidy. All we are doing is racing to the bottom. It does not make a lot of sense. I doubt most will move here from eagen they will just commute. Most of the worker probably live outside eagan anyway.

I'd like to also remind some of you that Uline's Eagan facility also currently employs Wisconsin residents as well. This is a fantastic opportunity for both Uline and Hudson. Just because you may not agree with Walker, doesn't mean that this shouldn't be viewed as a good thing for our ecomony - and why shoudn't Walker be there? Governors and legislators routinely attend such events to show their support for business - why would you even question his presence?

This is an all around good thing. In an economy such as ours business growth is a good thing. Uline is a great company. Wisconsin based company. They are good neighbors and very generous with the communities where they reside. Jobs, stimulus to the Hudson economy all come out of this. We should be proud that they chose Hudson to expand their business.

Wasn't this in plan even before Walker was gov.? So what is the point of him coming, cause from what I see, he had nothing to do with this move for Uline!

Eagan, Mn... Hudson, WI? All in the Twin Cities Metro area where people cross the border on a daily basis to work.

What did Herr Governor Walker have to do with any of this? If Uline is smart they will tell him to stay home.

Again notice the pattern. A closed private event. Herr Governor has not the intestinal fortitude to face the public. His entourage will take him inside and he will leave by a side exit so that he does not have to deal with his "subjects". What an ass.

Wow you all are so stubborn. You miss the grand point here. Uline is a good thing for Hudson. Get over today's activities and look into the future. Today is a great day.

Uline has also contributed heavily to Scott Walker's campaign:

» $205,500 by Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein of Illinois, who run Uline Shipping Supply Specialists. Walker is scheduled to deliver a jobs announcement today from a Uline plant in Hudson.

One of his largest donors. Uline won't have to pay taxes for two years just for packing up and moving from Eagan.

Cathy Leaf nailed it. Walker should try visiting the places and people who are taking all the hits so Uline doesn't have to contribute a dime for the services they will use.

Better yet, Walker should be polishing his resume and start looking for a private sector job himself!

Oh and I forgot to mention property taxes. Not a small amount. Lets see how are those broken up? oh yeah. Approx. 48% to public schools, 24% to the city 24 % to county and 2% to witc. I know I am off by a percent or 2 somewhere but you get my point. Salaries get paid with that money. Roads get paved. Raises are given to those in the public sector while those in the private go without one.

How many jobs is this " Job creation" effort adding? Pretty small when compared to this number isn't it? ( -11,700 in November) !!!!!!!!

Walker will deliver more false info. Uline released in the pioneer press that they were relocating to Hudson with most if not all of the original workers conming with. Uline estimated that it MIGHT create 20-30 NEW jobs if current employees do not transfer with the move. The comment about buying lunch and gas in Hudson, Wake Up! Gas is usually about $.10 - .15 cheaper in Minnesota than here is Hudson. Jobs are great for everybody But this is not a Guarantee. Where are the real solid jobs, we can not hope that the Uline workers do not want to drive here.

Wisconsin lost 11,700 private sector jobs in November. With additional job losses in the public sector, the state lost a seasonally adjusted total of 14,600 jobs last month.

It’s the fifth month in a row that Wisconsin lost private sector jobs at a time when employment is growing nationally.

But state Workforce Development Secretary Reggie Newson said the figures are only preliminary. For five months in a row, he said the final data showed that Wisconsin did better than what the initial numbers indicated.
