Hudson's Little Free Library Awarded National 'Innovations in Reading Prize'

Each year, the National Book Foundation recognizes five organizations that demonstrate passion, creativity, dedication and leadership in creating and sustaining a lifelong love of reading. This year, Todd Bol's Little Free Library is one of those winners.

Little Free Library was recently one of five organizations nationwide to receive the National Book Foundation’s Innovations in Reading Prize. Each year, the foundation recognizes five organizations that demonstrate passion, creativity, dedication and leadership in the service of creating and sustaining a lifelong love of reading. In 2010, when Hudsonite Todd Bol and Rick Brooks first shared ideas about what was to become the Little Free Library movement, the idea was simple: A box of books that looked like a one-room school house with a sign that said "Free Books." Posted in his front yard by the St. Croix River in Hudson, the first model was a memorial to Bol's mother, a teacher who loved to read. But the curiosity and delight of …

A federal judge denied C.S. McCrossan’s request to stop roadwork of the St. Croix River Crossing while the courts determine whether or not MnDOT illegally rejected its bid to construct the approach work for the $626 million project.

McCrossan’s request to stop roadwork of the St. Croix River Crossing while the courts determine whether or not MnDOT illegally rejected its bid to construct the approach work for the $626 million project. U.S. District Court Judge Richard Kyle put the federal case on hold until a separate lawsuit in the Minnesota Court of Appeals is resolved. “Of course, we’re extremely disappointed with the decision,” Tom McCrossan, president of the Maple Grove-based company, told the Star Tribune. “The reason we’re pursuing this is solely to prevent the wasteful expenditure of taxpayer money.” Last month, McCrossan alleged that MnDOT improperly awarded a bid to construct the approach work for the $626 million river crossing …
