John Milton discusses: For The Good Of The Order

Stories of Minnesota politics come to life in St Paul. John Watson Milton--and a host of Minnesota political notables--will discuss the career and achievements of Nick Coleman. Milton is the author of For the Good of the Order: Nick Coleman and the High Tide of Liberal Politics in Minnesota, 1971-1981. He will be joined at Common Good Books by John Kaul, chief of staff for the late Senate Majority Leader Coleman for many years, and by John Lindley, executive director of the Ramsey County Historical Society. Former Senator George Conzemius, Senator Coleman’s assistant majority leader, will also participate in the evening’s discussion. In January 1973, Nick Coleman became the first Democrat in 114 years to lead a majority in the Minnesota Senate. He provided the vision and leadership required to enact the Minnesota equivalent of Lyndon Johnson’s social and economic programs known as the Great Society. This was the high point of liberal politics in the state, the crest in voter support that also raised Hubert Humphrey, Eugene McCarthy, and Walter Mondale to national prominence. “Milton's book, For the Good of the Order: Nick Coleman and the High Tide of Liberal Politics in Minnesota, 1971-1981, breathes life into an important political figure and a dramatic era. ...I am glad to have finally met the man I have heard so much about.”--Minneapolis Star Tribune ---- John Watson Milton was born in St Paul, Minnesota. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs. He was elected to the Ramsey County Board and to the Minnesota Senate, where he was a recognized leader in health care policy. He lives with his wife Maureen Angelica Acosta on a small farm in Afton, Minnesota, where he writes and grows wine grapes.
