Gun Shop, Range Under Construction, Aiming for December Opening

Bill's Gun Shop & Range busy constructing a building within a building at the former Hudson Cinema 9 location. The retail and recreational facility hopes to open in December.

Bill's Gun Shop & Range was cleared to begin construction during , and company president and CEO John Monson isn't wasting any time getting the project underway.

Signs went up on the former Hudson Cinema 9 location at 1920 Crest View Dr. early this week touting a Dec. 1, 2012, target date for opening the retail shop and recreational shooting facility.

Monson told the city's Plan Commission and Common Council that he was basically constructing a building inside a building to ensure no rounds could escape the facility. He also said that noise from the facility wouldn't be noticable from outside, except for faintly from the parking lot just outside.

"This is an exciting time for Bill's Gun Shop & Range and we are excited to be part of the Hudson community," Monson said in a news release issued on Monday. "Our new facility will relieve some of the occasional crowding at our existing locations as well as provide even more for our valued customers throughout the area. I hope that all shooters, from the novice to the most experienced, will be better served by this expansion and the increased flexibility we can now offer in training, safety programs and special events."

Monson also runs Bill's Gun Shop & Range locations in Robbinsdale and Circle Pines.

There is something a bit disconcerting about re-purposing a vacant theater to an indoor shooting range, immediately following Aurora theater massacre.

The discussions about re-purposing the theater were going on long before the tragedy in Aurora.

This was in the works long before the Aurora shootings. I first reported it on May 25: http://hudson-wi.patch.com/articles/gun-shop-indoor-shooting-range-could-move-into-vacant-theater-space

The addition of an indoor gun range will be a big asset to our community and to those who desire to be well-practiced in the use of their guns.

If somebody wants to try and make the connection to the Aurora theatre shooting and starting a gun shop / shooting range in a vacant theatre is totally insane. There's simply no reason to even make a statement like that. It's called progress. I live in Hudson and I'm excited to finally see some of thetown's empty/ vacant building being used by new business owners. Why do some people even have to automatically think of the negative?!?!?!?!

No one disputes the tragedy in Colorado was devastating to the whole world, and will leave us all with a bad memory of the event for many years to come. With that being said, Bill’s Gun Shop and Range has been negotiating on this building site for almost a year and has spent countless thousands of dollars in the process, long before the tragedy in Colorado. Please also understand at Bill’s Gun Shop and Range I make it my personal objective to have my staff and company focused on education. Currently we teach hundreds of kids each year firearm safety, we teach hundreds of beginner adult classes, and we facilitate literally thousands of “newbie’s” to the shooting sports each year. I strongly believe at Bill’s we are making gun owners smarter and safer as a whole. John Monson Owner - Bill’s Gun Shop & Range
