Remembering Our Casualties of the Iraq War: Benjamin A. Smith

The Iraq War claimed the lives of nearly 90 Wisconsinites, among them was Army Spec. Benjamin Alexander Smith, 21, from Hudson.

This week is the 10-year anniversary of the beginning of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq that eventually led to the capture, trial and execution of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. 

Lost in the war was one local man.

Army Spec. Benjamin A. Smith, 21, of Hudson was killed near Baghdad on Nov. 2, 2005, when an improvised explosive device detonated next to his vehicle. The following rememberance pages have been set up for Smith:

By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including nearly 90 Wisconsinites.
