Game Review: L.A. Noire

L.A. Noire is like a song that's remade for every generation. This detective video game looks good, and is fun, but it's not the first of anything.

One thing I've always done off and on over the years is play video games. I wouldn't call myself a "gamer." I'm not someone who lives in the world video games create, but I do play and watch people play, and thought I'd throw out some thoughts on L.A. Noire, the new hot game released May 18 by Rockstar Games.

First, kudos have to go out to Rockstar for putting a lot of money behind creating and marketing a game that is definitely cerebral. Yes, there are car chases, and yes, there is shooting, but the core of this game is detective work. Searching for clues, searching locations, and interrogating suspects are all essential elements of gameplay, and I'd imagine gamers seeking the "shoot-em-up" style of game might get bored with this one.

Readers wanting a thorough review of gameplay mechanics, size and scope, and so on can go to Gamespot. The game is fun, immersive, but I wouldn't call it original. There have been games off and on over the years in which you solve the crime, or "play detective."  At its core, this is what L.A. Noire is. It's kind of like a song that's remade for every generation.  This one looks good, and is fun, but it's not the first of anything, and certainly doesn't define gaming in the way the GTA series, also from Rockstar Games, does.

But, it's fun!  I recommend picking it up after a price drop, if you're in the mood for some good, old-fashioned detective work.

My Score: *** of *****
