Craft Beer: An American Movement

Everyone has a hobby, mine is craft beer.

Welcome to my beer blog! My name is Kevin Nelson and I am a self-designated beer geek with a passion for all things finely fermented.

Chances are we have crossed paths at one point or another, either at the where I have served and bartended for the past five years, or at one of the many other fine local establishments in Hudson enjoying a fresh craft brew.

Since prohibition, the big three (Budweiser, Miller, Coors) have dominated the beer industry in terms of overall volume and market share. Until recent years, going to the liquor store was a simple task as brand loyalty was high and alternatives were limited. However, I'm sure many of you have noticed recently that the beer section at your favorite store is being transformed and overtaken by beers with clever names and flashy packaging. These beers represent the nearly 1,700 craft breweries that are now in operation in the U.S, and that number is increasing daily!

Have you ever heard of beer made with peanut butter? Or beer that tastes like bacon? These are just a couple of extreme examples of how the craft beer industry is pushing the limits of beer making by experimenting and thinking outside of the box.

Beer is no longer a meaningless beverage used to wash down chips and chicken wings at your Sunday football parties. Much like fine wine, craft beer is an experience that is meant to be enjoyed one sip at a time. I realize that everyone's palate is different and certain beers may not appeal to everyone, but with my help I am confident that you will find a beer you will love and will have a little fun doing it!

A few of my goals for this blog include:

  • Help you better understand craft beer and the craze that it has become
  • Help you make the transition from the big three to craft beer
  • Get people outside of their comfort zone and to try new things
  • Promote beer advocacy and support local business
  • Help you better understand the brewing process

For those of you who already enjoy craft beer and all that it has to offer, I will do my best to keep my posts intriguing and fun no matter what level you are on. I invite everyone to interact through the comments section and I will do my best to respond to any questions as quickly as I can. I am always open to requests and look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for reading, now lets dive in!

Prost!
