Dad Dies, Kids Hurt in Crash at Old Hwy. 35 and Tower Road

A blown stop sign put the minivan in the path of a minivan driven by a Hudson man, according to media reports and the Wisconsin State Patrol.

A 38-year-old Black River Falls man died Saturday in a crash at Old Highway 35 and Tower Road on Saturday that also injured three of his children and a Hudson man in a second vehicle, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol. 

Emergency responders found Scott W. Shoemaker dead at the scene of the 4:06 p.m. crash. Passengers in his car, including one son, age 14, and two daughters, 12 and 16, were taken to Regions Hospital. The girls were in serious condition and the boy had non-life threatening injuries. 

A Hudson man was the driver and only occupant the other vehicle involved, a Dodge minivan. Jason Edwards, 42, was treated at Hudson Hospital and released. 

Shoemaker, traveling westbound in a Mazda Protege, "failed to stop at the stop sign on Tower Road and traveled into the path of Mr. Edward's vehicle," according to the State Patrol release. 

Everyone in both vehicles was wearing a seatbelt, the release said, and alcohol was not a factor. 

Assisting agencies included St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department, St. Croix EMS, River Falls Ambulance and River Falls First Responders. 

The crash site is near the city of Hudson's southeast corner.  

The State Patrol is investigating the crash. 

Wisconsin has recorded 403 traffic fatalities in 2013 through Sunday, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation website. St. Croix County has had 10 fatalities in 2013 through Sunday. The statewide annural average of fatalities for the years 2008–2012 is 466. The St. Croix County average for the same period is 11.
