Police Investigate Fatal Crash in Town of St. Joseph

A 74-year-old Houlton woman was the victim of a fatal crash Monday afternoon on Highway 35/64 just north of Hilltop Drive in the Town of St. Joseph.

According to the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office:

At about 2:12 p.m. Monday, Darlene R. Breault was pulling out of the parking lot at 1415 Main Street in her 2001 Hyundai Accent travelling west, when her vehicle was reportedly broadsided by a 2004 Mazda Tribute driven by Becky Lee Markfort, 27, of New Richmond.

The parking lot is controlled by a stop sign, according to the sheriff’s office. Both vehicles came to rest on the median cement divider on Highway 35/64

Breault was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office. Markfort was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Payl with unknown injuries.

A passenger in Markfort’s vehicle was not injured.

Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt, according to the sheriff’s office. Airbags deployed in both vehicles.

This is the fourth fatal crash of the year in St. Croix County. The crash remains under investigation.
