St. Paul Man Dies After Swimming in the St. Croix River

A 23-year-old St. Paul man died Sunday evening after swimming in the St. Croix River near the marina in Bayport. He was wearing a life jacket.

Lee Vang’s cause of death has yet to be determined.

St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that Vang was with a group of friends in a boat near the Wisconsin shoreline across from Bayport when he decided to swim toward Minnesota.

About 10 feet from the shore, Vang reportedly called for his friends to help, but by the time the boat got to him and his friends pulled him from the river, he was unconscious, Shilts said. He was rushed to shore, but died at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
