UPDATE: Service Restored After Storm Knocks Out Power for Thousands in Hudson

In Wisconsin, service has been restored to 10,200 customers and 9,800 customers remain without power, according to Xcel Energy.

UPDATE: Xcel Energy issued the following press statement at 10 a.m.:

Xcel Energy has restored service to more than 32,700 customers impacted by severe thunderstorms that passed through Minnesota and Wisconsin last night and early this morning. There are many reports of downed power lines and broken poles throughout our service areas. Xcel Energy and contract crews are working throughout the two states restoring service.

Below are some key facts about the restoration efforts:

    • In Minnesota, service has been restored to 22,500 customers and 133,500 customers remain without power. The Twin Cities Metro area was significantly impacted by this storm; however, there are outages throughout our service area. Due to the extensive damage, some customers will be without power for an extended time.
    • In Wisconsin, service has been restored to 10,200 customers and 9,800 customers remain without power. Most customers in Wisconsin should be back in service by 6 p.m. Friday, June 21. However, due to the extensive damage in the Hudson area some customers there will be without power for an extended time.
    • Additional crews are traveling from South Dakota and North Dakota and other areas in the region to assist with the restoration work.
    From the city of Hudson:
    • City Hall's electrical service was restored at approximately 11:00 am Friday. The phone system appears to be operational. Staffing is limited for departments at City Hall due to the storm. Your patience as City Hall restores its service is appreciated.
    • Please be aware that the City will remove tree branches and debris ONLY from boulevard trees. Branches and other debris from non-boulevard, side or backyard trees are the responsibility of the homeowner. A tree service should be contacted for removal.

We will provide more information throughout this event as it becomes available.

    UPDATE:
Xcel Energy just posted the following on its Facebook page:

A severe band of thunderstorms moved through western Wisconsin early Friday morning, June 21. The storm caused significant damage to our electric system, including a number of downed poles and power lines. Outages are scattered throughout the state, with approximately 15,000 customers without power at this time, mostly in the Hudson area. We are currently assessing the damages and no restoration time is yet available. Additional crews from the North and South Dakota and other utilities have been coordinated to assist with restoration efforts. Please stay away from downed power lines and always assume a downed wire is energized and therefore dangerous. Report downed power lines to Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-1999 or call 9-1-1.
