Hudson Man Killed After Stepping Into Traffic on I-94

A 43-year-old Hudson man was killed when he stepped from the front of his vehicle parked on the shoulder into the path of oncoming traffic, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

UPDATE (10:05 a.m., Oct. 19, 2011): The Hudson Star-Observer is reporting that the incident has been ruled a suicide.

UPDATE (10:05 p.m., Oct. 4, 2011): The Wisconsin State Patrol has identified the person killed in today's incident at Andrew Michael Heimstead, 43, of Hudson. The driver of the vehicle that struck Heimstead was identified as Frank A. Goodwin, 57, of Arkansaw, WI.

According to the most recent Wisconsin State Patrol Press release:

"Michael Heimstad, age 43, from Hudson, WI was parked on the right shoulder of I94 eastbound at about milepost 5.5. He exited his pickup truck and walked into the right eastbound lane of traffic and into the path of an eastbound semi unit. Mr. Heimstad was struck by the front of the semi and died as a result of injuries he sustained. Investigation is ongoing by the Wisconsin State Patrol."

UPDATE (6:21 p.m., Oct. 4, 2011): The Wisconsin State Patrol has cleared the scene. All lanes are now open.

UPDATE (5:50 p.m., Oct. 4, 2011): The Wisconsin State Patrol is now reporting that a 43-year-old Hudson man was killed in the incident, according to a press release.

"Vehicle was stopped on right shoulder, driver stepped from front of vehicle into path of oncoming traffic. Driver sustained fatal injuries. Investigation is ongoing by the Wisconsin State Patrol. Name will be released pending notification of next of kin."

UPDATE (5:26 p.m., Oct. 4, 2011): The Wisconsin State Patrol is now reporting that all lanes are affected and that traffic is backed up at least three miles.

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, a crash at 4:38 p.m. has forced the closure of the right lane on eastbound Interstate 94 at mile post 5 just outside Hudson.
