Hudson Common Council Approves City Deer Hunt

The Hudson Common Council approved an archery-only deer hunt season in Hudson for a four-month period starting in September.

Deer will be hunted in the city of Hudson starting in September all the way through January 2012 per the Aug. 15 Common Council approval of the hunt.

With Alderperson Lee Wyland absent and Alderperson Randy Morrissette voting no, the four-month archery-only hunting season was approved to help reduce the deer population in the city by 50 to 75 deer.

The program will mirror last year’s pilot when 52 deer were killed.

This is the second time this month the population control project came up. At the Aug. 1 meeting resident Jeff Richie came to the meeting and passionately said while he supported controlling the deer population he thought the season was too long and suggested it be shortened to two months. He also volunteered to serve on an ad hoc committee.

Alderperson Rich Vaneslow said he was persuaded by Richie at the last meeting that the season should be abbreviated and wondered why it was longer.

"I was personally persuaded to shorten this to a two-month thing by the citizen’s comments," he said. "Only because he made some sense to me."

Mayor Alan Burchill said the program was designed how it was for a reason and shortening it would likely reduce the effectiveness of the program by cutting it in half.

With time closing in on the program’s opener council members were told they had to either amend it to the discussed two months or approve it as it was stated rather than wait for the organizer to attend another meeting and answer more questions.

Before voting against the proposal Morrissette suggested the language of a two- to four-month program. Before much discussion could be had on that idea, Alderperson Mary Yacoub said she didn’t have a problem with the long season and moved to approve it.

Burchill also appointed five people to an ad hoc committee for the deer management program which was approved. The committee is Chairman Tom Redner, Parks and Public Works Director Tom Zeuli, Park Board Chairman Paul Radermacher, citizen Kevin Harman and Morrissette.
