Deer Management and Coalition Donation on Tonight's Hudson City Council Agenda

Hudson's Common Council will talk about an archery-only deer management program this fall and consider donating money to the Coalition for the St. Croix River Crossing.

The members will discuss deer management in the city at tonight’s meeting at 7 p.m. at .

Up for approval is an archery-only deer hunt on public and private lands in the city from September through Jan. 31, 2012. The hunt will be created, managed and implemented by River Valley Deer Management.

The purpose is to remove antlerless deer to reduce the deer population by 50-75.

At the last meeting the idea was talked about and members of the council largely agreed the 2010 program was a success and noted the large deer population within the city.

One resident was against parts of the policy as he said deer are smart animals and the hunting period is too long.

Lon Feia of River Valley Deer Management said the hunt will help reduce deer-vehicle collisions.

The council will also consider making a donation to the Coalition for the St. Croix River Crossing – at the the president of the group asked the council to think about a $5,000 donation.
