Hudson Golf Club Owner May Donate Land to School District

The Hudson School District says it must study the land for suitability and consider several other factors. The referendum to purchase the St. Croix Meadows dog track will not be abandoned.

Chris Hanson, the owner of the Hudson Golf Club, has approached the Hudson School District about donating some of the golf course's land to the district to build a new secondary school.

Chris Hanson and family, and the Hudson School District have jointly issued the following press release:

Chris Hanson, Hammond resident and owner of the Hudson Golf Club, and District administrators met to discuss Mr. Hanson’s offer to donate up to 65 acres of the existing Hudson Golf Club course to the District for a future school site.

The donation would be part of future development of the Hudson Golf Course property that would include a road to help reduce traffic congestion at Carmichael and Coulee Roads and Exit 2. The precise location of the land that may be donated is not yet known.  The development and donation would have several contingencies, outside the control of Mr. Hanson or the District, including the City rezoning the property, approval of the land use plan, waiver of an 8 year restriction regarding continued use of the property as a golf course and construction of the road.

The District is appreciative of this most generous offer but the suitability of the land for use by the District to meet the educational needs of students will require consideration of several factors such as the size, location and topography of the proposed site, DNR regulations, sewer capacity, traffic access points, traffic volume, surrounding infrastructure and site flexibility, and the timing of the donation. These factors and others must be reviewed and studied to the extent information is available. The District and Mr. Hanson will continue to exchange information to help the District determine whether the proposed donation meets the needs of the District, is viable as a future school site and if so, what size school it would support.

Regardless of whether a donation occurs, the District must proceed with the referendum to purchase the 126-acre St. Croix Meadows site for a future secondary school, in accordance with the existing Purchase Agreement between the District and the St. Croix Meadows owners.

The District wishes to express its appreciation to Chris Hanson and his family for their generosity in making this proposal, and looks forward to continuing discussions about this possible donation in support of Hudson area students.
