MAP: More Wisconsin Property in Path of St. Croix River Crossing Project

Another Houlton farmer is upset about the St. Croix River Crossing Project and how it will split his farmland into two chunks. Who else is in the project's path?

Another Houlton farmer against the St. Croix River Crossing Project is making his voice heard.

Minnesota Public Radio on Friday published a story by Jessica Mador that included information from disgruntled Houlton farmers Ed Gillstrom and Neil Severson. Severson expressed concern over how his farm land is in the direct path of what will become an expressway connecting the current Highway 35/64 to the new bridge. According to the MPR article, Severson's farm will be split in two by the highway, making it impossible for his cattle to cross to much of the pasture.

Gillstrom also was featured in a Star Tribune story last month about similar concerns on his own farm land.

Last month Patch published a map showing how the new expressway likely will affect Gillstrom's property.

After attending the St. Croix Crossing open house at last month, Patch learned that some property acquired by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) in the 1990s won't be used for the project because of redesigns over the past decade.

WisDOT property near County Road E will be used, but the path from County Road E south to the river has been altered. A quick look at St. Croix County property records shows the apparent path the new highway will take and property owners who likely will be affected.

WHO ELSE IS IN THE PATH?

According to 2011 property tax records, the land south of County Road E is owned by the following people:

  • TURQUOISE: Richard and Veronica Durand
  • PURPLE: Mary M. Gilbert
  • ORANGE: Laverne Anderson
