Scott Walker Recall Petition Drive Underway in Hudson

Democratic volunteers gather at midnight to be among the first to sign the Recall Walker petition.

With a few flicks of his wrist, Joel Kulow of Hudson signed his name to the Scott Walker recall petition at the St. Croix County Democrats office shortly after midnight Tuesday morning. Kulow, a Democratic Party volunteer, was quickly followed by four others just minutes after midnight.

On Sunday, about 25 volunteers showed up for petition training and a rally with 93rd Assembly District candidate Jeff Smith and Professional Firefighters Association president Mahlon Mitchell.

"Walker balanced the budget on the backs of the working class," said Cathy Leaf, chairperson of the St. Croix County Democratic Party. "Budgets are about choices. It's clear that Walker doesn't stand up for workers. He doesn't stand up for seniors. And he doesn't stand up for kids. Who does he stand for?"

The recallers must gather 540,000 signatures in 60 days to force a recall election. Kulow will be among the volunteers collecting signatures in Hudson once mobile operations are in place.

For now, the group is urging people to visit the party office at 901 Fourth Street, Suite 101 between noon and 6 p.m. The office will open at 9 a.m. on Saturdays. The group is also directing people to the state party's recall website or to call 715-381-9600 for more information about the effort.
