Hudsonite Jordan Cullen Wins Short & Fat Race at Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival

Jordan Cullen finishes course in under 49 minutes, nearly four minutes ahead of the pack.

Jordan Cullen, 16, of Hudson finished first in Saturday's Short & Fat race at the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival in Cable.

It is a mass-start, 16-mile cross-country race from downtown Cable to Telemark Resort. It's the little-sister course to the more well-known Chequamegon 40, which starts in downtown Hayward and ends at the resort.

Jordan's father, Jim, detailed his son's achievement in a post on The Life of a Cycling Addict, his training blog.

In the post, Jim wrote:

"Jordan won the Chequamegon Short and Fat race, held in Cable, WI yesterday. He did so in dominating fashion, attacking the 900 racer field just a mile or so into the race as the surface changed from pavement to gravel. Only Ian Haupt attempted to follow, but was soon reeled in by a front group of chasers. Jordan finished nearly 4 minutes clear, in the 2nd fastest time in the 29 year history of the event."

He then went on to give some perspective on the race itself, how Jordan got his bike and how Jordan was a bit bummed to have to miss Homecoming for the race.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel gave the youngster some love as well. According to a post on JSOnline.com, Cullen "destroyed the men’s Short & Fat field, finishing in 48:41.6."

UPDATE (10 a.m., Sept. 20, 2011): Jim Cullen sent the following race recap to Hudson Patch:

Jordan Cullen, of Hudson, WI, won the Chequamegon Short and Fat Bike Race held in Cable, WI this past Saturday. Jordan, age 16, destroyed the field of 900 riders, winning by nearly 4 minutes. Ian Haupt, of Whitefish Bay, WI was 2nd. Nate Labecki, of Milwaukee, WI finished 3rd. Jordan's time of 48:41.6 is the 2nd fastest time in the 29 year history of the event, averaging 19.7mph over the 16 mile off-road course.

The race starts in downtown Cable, WI, finishing at the famous Telemark Lodge. Jordan accelerated away alone, a mile into the race, and never looked back. Haupt was the only one who tried to follow, but was quickly reeled in by a chasing group of a dozen riders. Jordan never let up, driving hard all the way to the finish on his Trek Top Fuel Mountain Bike, which a teammate loaned him for the race.

"I wanted to win, but I was also going for the record time of 47:36 set by Jeff Hall back in 1993. I didn't break the record, but I'm really happy to win this prestigious race!" said Jordan. Primarily a road and cyclocross racer, this was his first time racing the Short and Fat. He will likely be back to defend the title in 2012. Jordan stated "You have to be 18 to race the Chequamegon 40, so next year, the Short and Fat is still my only option."

Jordan has been racing bikes since he was 9 years old, and is the current Category 1/2 Wisconsin State Road Race Champion. He races for Minneapolis Bicycle Racing Club sponsored by Flanders Cycles.

Jordan is a 10th Grader at Hudson High School. His parents are Jim and Carla, and has an older sister Maren, 18.
