Patch Editors Place Friendly Wager on Packers-Vikings Playoff Game

A six-pack of locally brewed beer is at stake in a friendly wager between the Hudson Patch editor and the Stillwater Patch editor on Saturday's Packers-Vikings playoff game. Post your trash talk and photos.

Hudson Patch Editor Micheal Foley, a Packers fan, and Stillwater Patch Editor Shawn Hogendorf, a Vikings fan, are each putting their beer where their mouth is in the form of a friendly wager on Saturday's Packers-Vikings playoff game. If Green Bay wins, Foley will receive a six-pack of Lift Bridge Brewing's Chestnut Hill beer brewed in Stillwater, and if Minnesota wins, Hogendorf will receive a six-pack of American Sky Beer's Tailgunner Gold beer brewed in Hudson. According to WCCO, Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak placed a food wager on the game earlier this week: If the Vikings win, Mayor Rybak will get BelGioioso cheese, Sno-Cap Root Beer from Titletown Brewing Company and Beernsten’s candies — all from Green…

Gov. Scott Walker Takes to Twitter to Back NFL Refs

Republican governor says it's time to bring back the "real referees" — who are unionized.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, known for his anti-union stance, is stuck between Twitter and a hard place this morning after putting a #Returntherealrefs hashtag at the end of a tweet regarding Monday night’s loss by the Green Bay Packers. “After catching a few hours of sleep, the #Packers game is still just as painful. #Returntherealrefs” he tweeted from his @GovWalker account. The Packers suffered a controversial 14-12 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in which a last-play touchdown appeared to have two blown calls that would have overturned the touchdown. The calls were made by replacement officials, working in place of locked-out, unionized NFL officials.  Walker was the target of a recall election in June after the state passed Act 10, which…

Viewfinder: Packers Fans Flock to Village Inn's Super Bowl Tailgate Party

The North Hudson bar is a very popular destination to watch Packers football, but today is special.

The Village Inn Sports Bar & Grill in North Hudson has a giant "G" Packers logo on the outside, so you knew owner Leigh Halvorson was going to do something special for the team's appearance in Super Bowl XLV.  Right away when you pull into the parking lot you know something's going on. There's a huge snow bank painted with the image of the Lombardi Trophy, and two tents set up just outside the main entrance. Under one tent, bartender Jethro Lund is selling Girl Scout cookies, beer, brats and other goodies. In the other tent, there's a TV set up with several chairs. Even though the temperature is down near 30 degrees, plenty of people are standing on the patio and in the tent. Some are eating brats, some are smoking, some are just chatting…

Hudson Veteran Gets Special Birthday Present from Green Bay Packer Charles Woodson

A local Iraq war veteran was the guest of honor at a release party at Charles Woodson's winery in Napa Valley last year.

James Jones wanted a gift of vintage wine for his 30th birthday last year. He got far more than that. At a special birthday celebration in Napa Valley on May 24, 2009, the donor of Jones' wine was  Charles Woodson—the star cornerback for the Green Bay Packers who also happens to own a Napa Valley vineyard and is also Jones' favorite NFL player. Jones ended up being feted at the winery's release party like a celebrity ballplayer himself: a five-hour guest of honor and recipient of multiple hugs and long, firm handshakes from Woodson. Jones, a former Hudson Raiders hockey player, served a tour of duty in Iraq a couple of years ago and was injured during a parachute accident, from which he has somewhat recovered. He was part of an armed …
