It's official. Hudson Mayor Alan Burchill will face a challenge from longtime District 5 Alderman Scot O'Malley. Both individuals filed their paperwork ahead of today's 5 p.m. deadline and will face off in the April 3 election. In the other contested city race, former Alderman Dennis O'Connell will face Kurt TeWinkel to see who will take over Lee Wyland's seat. Wyland no longer lives in District 4 because of recent redistricting. In the Town of Hudson, Supervisor Ken Kolbe is facing a challenge from Don Jordan. The Hudson School District Board of Education race drew so many candidates that a primary will be held on Feb. 21 to narrow the field. At its Oct. 11 meeting, the Hudson School District Board of Education heard the results of a feasibility study conducted by Hoffman LLC on the St. Croix Meadows Dog Track for use of the site as a secondary school.
A preliminary evaluation of the St. Croix Meadows Dog Track has found it to be very suitable for a new school. The feasibility study was conducted by Hoffman LLC. Hoffman had previously evaluated the property on County Road UU for a secondary school location, but found that site to have a lack of land that could be developed. Last week, the board had approved a referendum be brought to the public for purchase of the St. Croix Meadows Dog Track. If the referendum passes, the board will offer $8.25 million for the location. The Hudson School District Board of Education voted at a special meeting Monday to make an offer to purchase the long-vacant St. Croix Meadows Dog Track property. The district hopes to use the site for a new school building in the future.
At a special meeting Monday evening held at River Crest Elementary School, the Hudson School District Board of Education voted unanimously to make an offer to purchase the long-vacant St. Croix Meadows Dog Track property. According to the commercial purchase agreement, the district will offer $8.25 million for the property. The district hopes to use the site for a new school building in the future. The entire deal is contingent upon the district securing the needed revenue through an upcoming referendum. Before the vote was taken, Superintendent Mary Bowen-Eggebraaten put forth the case for a new school building by citing previously calculated enrollment projections. The Hudson School District Board of Education was presented the results of the districts 2010-11 SMART goals at its Aug. 9 meeting held at River Crest Elementary School. SMART goals is an acronym for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely. The district set specific goals at for the 2010-11 school year, pertaining to all elementary schools, as well as the middle school and high school. The SMART goals set for the Hudson High School were: The high school did a good job at reaching those goals. The number of students enrolled in AP classes increased by 14.8 percent from October 2010. The Hudson School District Board of Education met for a regular meeting on Tuesday, July 12.
Despite increases in student fees and facility use fees, and decreasing spending and health insurance costs, the Hudson School District faces a budget deficit of $38,792 for the 2011-2012 school year, according to a preliminary budget report from district Financial Services Director Tim Erickson. Erickson delivered the budget report, which assumes a 2 percent tax levy increase, at the district's Board of Education meeting on Tuesday night. He noted that the 2011-12 budget "assumes no increase in any salary wages." Erickson also said that despite student membership in the district going up, the district is getting around $2.6 million cut in state aid and grants. I'm no financial Wizard, but even I can understand this. These funds that you consider 'Squirreled away" are usually set aside to have money available to make payments that would otherwise throw the County into debt. So by having a reserve , the County is actually SAVING YOU money by not having to go out a secure a loan and pay interest. Get it?   more ›
