School District officials delivered a 45-minute information presentation about the proposed $8.25 million St. Croix Meadows dog track purchase. They fielded audience questions for about an hour.
Nearly 50 North Hudson residents got their chance Monday, Feb. 27, to hear Hudson School District officials make the case to purchase the St. Croix Meadows dog track property for $8.25 million. Hudson School District Superintendent Mary Bowen-Eggebraaten and Board of Education member Tom Holland delivered a 45-minute information presentation and fielded questions for about an hour at North Hudson Village Hall. It was the first of three such information presentations throughout the district before voters decide on the referendum on April 3.

Tuesday's Hudson School District Board of Education primary election saw two challengers at the top of the results while two incumbents were at the bottom. In the process Barbara Van Loenen, current board president, was eliminated from the race. In last year's school board election, both incumbents — Dan Tjornehoj and Lynn Robson — won re-election over challenger James Kubiak. The Hudson School District has chance to spend $8.25 million to purchase property valued at $16.8 million. Voters will decide on April 3, but Plan Commission is still to decide on zoning.
At its regular monthly meeting on Feb. 14 at River Crest Elementary School, the Hudson School District Board of Education received an appraisal showing the St. Croix Meadows dog track property is far more valuable than the district's $8.25 million purchase price. Voters will decide on the land purchase in an April 3 referendum. Jeff White and Paul Daley of Eau Claire-based Valuation Specialists delivered the appraisal report showing that the property is worth about $16.8 million — $7.1 million in land value and $9.7 million in site improvements that include the existing building and infrastructure. It's official. Hudson Mayor Alan Burchill will face a challenge from longtime District 5 Alderman Scot O'Malley. Both individuals filed their paperwork ahead of today's 5 p.m. deadline and will face off in the April 3 election. In the other contested city race, former Alderman Dennis O'Connell will face Kurt TeWinkel to see who will take over Lee Wyland's seat. Cathy Leaf, chairwoman of the St. Croix County Democratic Party, filed the necessary paperwork on Thursday to run for a seat on the Hudson School District Board of Education, according to the superintendent's office.
