Bob: Which questions were not "balanced" or relevant? All the questions were ones that could be addressed by all the candidates. The answers everyone gave were important insights into all of them. When the League of Women Voters ran it, the same "question filter" applied. Questions to specific candidates weren't asked because all the candidates need to be able to respond. Dog Track Appraised at $16.8 Million; Rezoning Remains Uncertain

The Hudson School District has chance to spend $8.25 million to purchase property valued at $16.8 million. Voters will decide on April 3, but Plan Commission is still to decide on zoning.

At its regular monthly meeting on Feb. 14 at River Crest Elementary School, the Hudson School District Board of Education received an appraisal showing the St. Croix Meadows dog track property is far more valuable than the district's $8.25 million purchase price. Voters will decide on the land purchase in an April 3 referendum. Jeff White and Paul Daley of Eau Claire-based Valuation Specialists delivered the appraisal report showing that the property is worth about $16.8 million — $7.1 million in land value and $9.7 million in site improvements that include the existing building and infrastructure. The appraisal was based current market conditions and as if the property was rezoned for public use and used as a school site. St. Croix County…

I've been wondering the same things, Calvin. A lot has changed since 2003. The MS has been (somewhat) expanded and River Crest was built since then, but I can't find much information about the UU property, either. I'm following this just to see where it goes and am interested in more information from Lars Glockzin's comments above. In the meantime, I just can't get behind purchasing the dog track…   more ›

Spring Election: Who's on the Ballot?

Alan Burchill and Scot O'Malley face off in the mayoral race. Dennis O'Connell and Kurt TeWinkel vie for council seat. Seven candidates are up for school board seats; February primary will narrow the field.

It's official. Hudson Mayor Alan Burchill will face a challenge from longtime District 5 Alderman Scot O'Malley. Both individuals filed their paperwork ahead of today's 5 p.m. deadline and will face off in the April 3 election. In the other contested city race, former Alderman Dennis O'Connell will face Kurt TeWinkel to see who will take over Lee Wyland's seat. Wyland no longer lives in District 4 because of recent redistricting. In the Town of Hudson, Supervisor Ken Kolbe is facing a challenge from Don Jordan. The Hudson School District Board of Education race drew so many candidates that a primary will be held on Feb. 21 to narrow the field. Three seats are up for grabs with all three incumbents running against four challengers. There …

I'm no financial Wizard, but even I can understand this. These funds that you consider 'Squirreled away" are usually set aside to have money available to make payments that would otherwise throw the County into debt. So by having a reserve , the County is actually SAVING YOU money by not having to go out a secure a loan and pay interest. Get it?   more ›

County Democratic Party Chair to Run for Nonpartisan School Board Seat

Leaf says she is running for school board as a mom, not as a Democrat.

Cathy Leaf, chairwoman of the St. Croix County Democratic Party, filed the necessary paperwork on Thursday to run for a seat on the Hudson School District Board of Education, according to the superintendent's office. School board positions are nonpartisan, and Leaf says she's running as a mom, not as a Democrat.  "I’m running for school board to ensure that the Hudson School District continues to provide a quality education for its students," Leaf said. "My husband and I moved to Hudson in large part because of the quality of the school district. But our district faces many challenges that need to be addressed in a realistic manner that supports our children’s educational needs, first and foremost. My degree in education, experience as a …
