'Heroin in Hudson: A Community Crisis' Forum Set for July 18

The drug that contributed to 'Glee' actor Cory Monteith's recent death is the subject of a public forum at First Presbyterian Church at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Hudson Community Foundation is sponsoring "Heroin in Hudson: A Community Crisis," a public forum to address heroin abuse on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church. The forum begins at 6:30 p.m.

According to a flier posted online this is the order of speakers at the forum:

  • Introduction
  • Nick Motu, Hazelden, Explanation of opiate based painkillers and how they lead to heroin
  • Phil Drewiske, Recovering addict, Personal story
  • Roger and Judy Drewiske, Parents story
  • Peter VanDusartz, Hudson Hospital Programs for Change, Physical and psychological effects of heroin addiction
  • Steven Skoog, Recovering addict, Personal story
  • Jodi and Phil Skoog, Parents story
  • Law enforcement HPD Det. Sgt. Geoff Willems; St. Croix County Investigator Jim Mikla
  • Karen Hale, mother of Alysa Ivy, A mother’s story
  • St. Croix County Coalition, Sara Seidel
  • Closing remarks and adjourn to question and answer period
A KARE 11 report features one of the scheduled speakers, Karen Hale:  

"'This is the face of a mother of a heroin addict. My daughter is the face of a heroin addict,' Hale said through tears. 'This is the most excruciating pain, and I don't want another parent to feel this.'"
