Highway 35 in Hudson Reopens After Construction Equipment Hits Railroad Bridge

A semi carrying a load too high to make it under the railroad bridge on Highway 35 caused traffic issues in Hudson and North Hudson Tuesday afternoon.

The driver was trying to pull a flatbed trailer with a bobcat and asphalt roller under the railroad bridge just after noon, Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen said. The load was too high, and the roller hit the bridge and fell off the trailer into the road.

The road was partially closed for about 25 minutes, Jensen said. When Jerry’s Towing arrived to remove the roller from the road, the street was shut down for about an hour.

Highway 35 opened to vehicle traffic at about 1:40 p.m.

The crash also caused railroad traffic over the bridge to stop while Pacific Railroad inspected the bridge, Jensen said. After inspecting the bridge, the plan was to run one train over the bridge, and then close it down for railroad traffic again to re-inspect it.

“Inspectors told me the railroad bridge looked fine, but they wanted to check it again after a train went over it,” Jensen said. “It appears the crash caused minor damage.”

No one was injured as a result of the crash. Driver information was not immediately available.

Hudson Police wrote the crash report, but the Wisconsin State Patrol took over the incident and may issue citations to the driver, Jensen said.

The crash remains under investigation.
